Slain Chicago officer remembered as 'model cop'

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) --   A Chicago Police commander who was gunned down by a suspect this week is being remembered as a "model cop" who wasn't interested in self-promotion, even as he moved up the department's ranks.
Speakers at Commander Paul Bauer's funeral Saturday said he was most proud of his titles as husband to his wife, Erin, and father to his daughter, Grace.
Former First Deputy Superintendent John Escalante, who grew up with Bauer, says "Erin and Grace were everything" to the 53-year-old.
Bauer died Tuesday after he responded to a call for help from fellow officers and was shot six times as he pursued a suspect. Prosecutors have charged 44-year-old Shomari Legghette with the killing.
Officers from across the U.S. joined other mourners, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Gov. Bruce Rauner and former Mayor Richard Daley, at the service.
