A 57-year-old man died this weekend after a fire at Shamrock Apartments in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to 222 Jacolyn Drive SW Saturday morning for an apartment fire. They responded at 9:42 a.m., and they were told a person was trapped inside a burning apartment.

Before crews arrived, neighbors heard smoke alarms and saw smoke coming from the closed door of an apartment unit. Police say neighbors were able to get into the apartment and used portable fire extinguishers to knock down a fire inside the apartment.

Firefighters say they found the 57-year-old with severe burns and he was taken to the the hospital for treatment where he later died. The man's name has not been released.

The fire was contained to one apartment unit, and right now firefighters are investigating how it sparked.
