CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 29-year-old man from Chicago will serve a federal prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to more than 25 thefts spanning five Midwestern states.

Paris Lawrence was sentenced to eight months in federal prison in Cedar Rapids District Court yesterday, after he admitted to taking part in the thefts at various home improvement stores from February 2016 through May 2016. The thefts happened in Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana.

A court report on the sentencing says Lawrence and his co-conspirators would enter the store and take items, only to later return the items for store credit. Lawrence racked up more than $36,000 worth of merchandise during the conspiracy.

Lawrence will also pay a special assessment and was ordered to pay back $36,438.33 in restitution to Lowe's Home Improvement, according to the court report.
