Eat, pray, love: Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day on same date this year

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

It's not the usual Ash Wednesday.

While the pews at Church of the Nativity in Dubuque are packed with the faithful, businesses are trying to keep up with the demand of Valentine's Day.

It's the first time they've both fallen on the same date, since 1945.

"So it's kinda rare, but it does kinda interfere with some things maybe somewhat," said Father Jim Miller.

It's the start of the lenten season when people fast, not eat meat...and maybe even chocolates, and champagne this year. Shoppers at Betty Jane Candies rushing last minute to buy goodies for their sweethearts.

"Didn't know that ever happened before, and keeping my fingers crossed that a lot of people didn't give up sweets or candy for lent today," said Andrew Siegert, Betty Jane Candies President. "Valentine's Day is our third biggest holiday."

Father Jim Miller reminding us there's always love in Ash Wednesday, too.

"We're thinking about the love of our Lord, and how do we grow on that, and if we truly love our Lord, we love those around us."

Also, in several weeks, Christians will go through this again. This year, April Fools Day and Easter fall on the same date, Sunday, April 1.
