"Java West," Waterloo coffee shop run by students with special needs

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A unique wake up call at one eastern Iowa high school.

At Waterloo West High School, there's a coffee shop called Java West inside the building for students and teachers to use.

The shop even delivers orders to classrooms.

With some help from teacher Holly Thompson, Java West is run completely by students who have special needs.

9th and 10th grade students work at the shop, and it's open mainly in the morning during 1st through 4th period.

Java West has been around for 9 years now, but it has really grown.

It has a slushy machine, baked cookies, chips and more.

The goal of the shop is to help these students develop their independence and life skills, and help prepare them for a job after college.

There's also a similar coffee shop at East High School in Waterloo.
