Iowan wins national 'Best Bagger' title in Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:

Trevor DeForest sent us this statement after his big win in Vegas:

"It feels surreal, I still can't believe I won the competition last night. I am so honored to have represented Fareway Stores and the state of Iowa in the competition. It was a great competition, with the best baggers from all around the country," he said.  "Everything just kind of fell into place for me. I had such a great support system cheering me on. We had friends and family travel all the way to Vegas. Not to mention all of the people who watched and cheered us on through Facebook live. To see the support and encouragement from our entire community of Maquoketa, friends and family all across the state of Iowa, and all of my fellow Fareway employees has just been awesome."

The best bagger has been crowned by the National Grocers Association, and it's Maquoketa Fareway’s Trevor DeForest.  This is the seventh national title for Iowa, but it's the first for the state since 2000.

DeForest began working for Fareway at the age of 14 at their Osceola store.  He now has about 21 years of bagging experience and currently works as assistant manager at the Maquoketa Fareway store.

The national contest was held Monday night at The Mirage in Las Vegas as part of the 2018 NGA Show.  23 contestants from across the country raced to bag approximately 35 commonly-purchased items into three reusable grocery bags, according to Emily Toribio with Fareway Stores, Inc. Scoring was based on speed, weight distribution, and proper item arrangement.

You can see video of tonight’s competition featuring Trevor on the Fareway Facebook page.

He received $10,000 as part of the grand prize.  KWWL congratulates Trevor on his national title!
