Fire takes out three businesses in downtown Vinton

Posted: Updated:

A large fire destroyed a number of business in downtown Vinton.

It was first reported last night inside Michael & Dowd Furniture store, then it spread to Clingman Pharmacy and Fischer Law Firm.

Today all three businesses appeared to be a total loss.

At this time it's unknown how the fire got going.

A structural engineer is going to check out how sound the remaining structure is before investigators can get inside and try to determine what started the blaze.

The fire burned hot in freezing temperatures leaving what's left covered in ice.

"It's always been a furniture store, the pharmacy and a lawyer's office as long as I can remember," Dianna Wiese told us.

Many in Vinton have memories in the building, going back generations.

"My mom always told us stories about Clingman's, used to be like a pharmacy but it had the little soda shop in front and they'd come down to get sodas or milkshakes or whatever for a quarter," Wiese says.

People could be seen driving by slowly today to get a glimpse of the wreckage.

Police tape marked off the area along with barricades which closed portions of the road.

"The pharmacy was a good place so I hope they get that rebuilt," Olivia Spencer told us.

"It's heartbreaking, I mean fires destroy so I mean it's heartbreaking I just hope they can save the building," Wiese says.
