Tire Safety: Check your tread and pressure

Posted: Updated:

While many Iowans are used to driving on snow-covered roads, it's important to make sure your vehicle is prepared for the winter weather.

That starts with your tires.

Experts remind drivers to make sure your tires have enough tread while keeping an eye on your tire pressure, because pressure drops when the weather gets colder.

Tire experts remind drivers to check your tire pressure at least once a month.

"What happens is, the rubber compounds in most tires get much harder in the snowy and icy conditions when it gets below 45 degrees. So, having a winter tire specifically is going to do a much better job of staying more pliable or more flexible, and it can in fact increase your traction 25 to 50 percent," Discount Tire Store Manager, Paul Ribbens said.

Whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive, Ribbens recommends replacing all four tires at the same time to ensure your safety.
