UPDATE: Dubuque business total loss after fire

Posted: Updated:

Thick smoke filled the sky as Dubuque area fire crews worked to put out what seems like an unstoppable blaze.

Link Hydraulic located on the west end, just off Highway 20, was consumed by flames early Thursday morning.

The owners, Andy and Kenneth Link, said within an hour, it was all gone. They have lost all their inventory, the equipment needed to keep them going, but said they will figure out a way to continue operating.

Several hours later, firefighters were still on scene checking for hot spots as they work to determine what might have started the difficult to fight blaze.

"The size of the building, is also different. Commercial fires are a little bit more challenging than residential fires. Takes more people, more resources," said Calvin Motsch, Asst. Fire Chief of Dubuque..

Checking for hot spots will be an on-going process because crews haven't been able to go inside the building to fight the fire.

Firefighters tell us the Link Hydraulic building is a total loss after a fire this morning.

It started shortly after 4:00 a.m. off of Westside Court. Firefighters saw a lot of flames when they got there.

The Dubuque Fire Chief says someone nearby called it in. He says the fire started in the left side of the building.

Firefighters had to get assistance from Asbury and Centralia fire departments.

Nobody was inside at the time, and no one got hurt.

The building fire is now under investigation.
