Person rescued from Mississippi River

Posted: Updated:

Rescue crews in southeastern Iowa pulled a person from the Mississippi River today, after cutting through ice to reach the person.

Around 30 crew members in Muscatine responded to the scene on the city's riverfront around 4:30 p.m. on Monday evening. A fire report on the situation says a boat was used to to clear away ice for about 15 feet before responders could reach flowing water, where the person was located.

Once the person was saved, medical attention on-shore began immediately, and then person was taken to a nearby hospital. Fire crews say the person is in critical condition tonight. Police continue to investigate the rescue and what led up to it tonight.

The Muscatine Police Department, Muscatine Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Search and Rescue, Muscatine Fire Department and Muscatine County Emergency Management combined forces at the scene. Three responders were also taken to the hospital because of exposure in the wintry elements today, but are believed to be in okay condition and were treated as a preventative measure.
