Hawkeye wrestlers top Northwestern 33-2 in home finale

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Number seven Iowa won nine of ten matches in a dominant performance to rout 17th ranked Northwestern 33 to 2.

Second ranked Brandon Sorensen, the only Iowa senior on the mat on Sunday, needed a late match scramble at 149 pounds to keep his unbeaten streak alive. Sorensen picked up an escape in the final seconds to tie number five Ryan Deakin at 4-4 and send the match to sudden victory. Deakin was whistled for grabbing Sorensen's headgear early in the extra session, ending the match with a point awarded for the violation.

Afterward, the 3-time All-American from Denver-Tripoli talked about what it meant to run in to Carver Hawkeye Arena one final time. "It's not like this is the end right now. We've got bigger things coming in March. That's my goal," said Sorensen, "It's always fun to come out here and perform in front of these fans one last time, but we've got bigger things in front of us."

Iowa travels to face top ranked Penn State on Saturday.
