WARNING: Black Hawk County scam

Posted: Updated:
BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a recent phone scam where the caller is stating they are Deputy Mark Davis from the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office Civil Division.

The caller who says he is a Deputy instructs the person to purchase pre-approved cards and to scratch off the numbers on the back of the card and read them back to him. If the victim refuses to comply the caller will tell them that a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

Another tactic being used is the caller identifies himself as Deputy Gavin with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office and will tell the victim that he needs to meet with him to compare signatures because they failed to show up for Federal Jury Duty. The victim is told that they will be arrested if they don't comply.

The phone number that these calls are coming from is 319-214-2390. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office does not have anybody employed with them by the name of Deputy Gavin or Deputy Mark Davis.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says they would never request anybody to go purchase pre-approved cards or to meet in a random location to compare signatures. They ask that you don't give out any personal information or bank account or credit card information to anybody requesting similar information.

The Black Hawk County Dispatch Center has received about twenty calls in the last six days where victims have called in receiving phone calls from people claiming to be deputies.
