Beat the Bitter event brings the fun outside

NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

On a freezing cold day, one Iowa town is encouraging people to go outside.

The third annual Beat the Bitter event is underway in North Liberty with it's Fire and Ice Friday celebration. Despite the cold temperatures, people were kept warm with hot chocolate and group bonfires. Others braved the temperatures to lace up their skates for ice skating.

"Beat the Bitter was formed a few years because of exactly the fact that people don't leave their houses. We get through the holidays and all of the excitement and then there's really nothing to look forward until spring break  so we like that Beat the Bitter is right there in the middle something for people to look forward to, to see their neighbors to see people from their community and just bundle up and realize that even though it's winter we can still do fun things," Jillian Miller, North Liberty Community Engagement Coordinator, said.

Families also had the chance to catch a horse drawn carriage ride. Ice sculpting and wood carving were other attractions to keep people entertained among many others. The night was then capped off with a 15-minute firework show.

The last day for Beat the Bitter is on Saturday. That day there will be more events like a 5K-ish obstacle course, a curling tournament, snowmobile rides, and a broomball tournament.

More about Saturday's lineup of events can be found here.
