New Cedar Falls elementary school set to open Fall 2018

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

An area school district is experiencing some growing pains, but relief is in sight, thanks to a brand new building.

In April crews began building Cedar Falls' seventh elementary school. Aldrich Elementary, located off of Hudson Road, is taking shape and should be finished this summer.

The school will be finished in time for the start of next school year.  The school district says around 375 students will start there in September. Kim Cross has been named Aldrich's principal and she is grateful for the community's support on this project.

"I envision students, I envision teachers, I envision excitement of the use," said Principal Cross. "There are so many different uses and being able to see the kids take advantage of that will be really exciting for me."

The school is built to make learning flexible. The design allows students and classes to easily work together.

"I've heard from many students that they are excited to be able to say, 'I am the first one that went to this school'," said Principal Cross.

The Cedar Falls School District is really excited because adding this new school will help all students in Cedar Falls.

"We have trailers at North Cedar right now, trailers at Southdale, we have trailers at Orchard Hill and we have Lincoln that is over crowded by roughly 160-180 students," said Dr. Andy Pattee, Cedar Falls Superintendent. "We know this is going to alleviate the over-crowding and it will allow all students to be in a regular classroom."

Aldrich's classrooms are built with maximum space for students, lots of sunlight and the ability to open up classrooms into larger areas so classes can collaborate. The school district is anxious to open the school so the other six elementary schools can function better.

"Some rural school districts and other school districts throughout Iowa are actually seeing population decline and so it's an exciting problem to have that we are growing in Cedar Falls schools," said Principal Cross.

Students will be pulled from each of the six other elementary schools and placed into Aldrich. Some students say they are sad to leave their friends, but excited to start at a brand new school.

This will be the first new school for the district since the sixties. The project cost $40 million. For more information on the project's progress CLICK HERE.
