Illegal trafficking results in death of more than 400 canaries

Posted: Updated:

An illegal trafficking scheme in Bolivia is the reason that more than 400 canaries have died, according to Peruvian authorities.

An official at Peru's National Forest and Wildlife Service said 580 birds were brought to her care in Lima after they were found inside a bus with no food or water. The birds were found in rust cages and all the birds were in only 16 cages.

The people accused of smuggling the birds were found in high altitudes where temperatures were low. In two days of the birds arrival, over 400 have died because of the "stress and poor conditions in which they were being transported."
