IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Legendary NBC journalist Tom Brokaw's personal items are now available at the University of Iowa.

Brokaw donated his collection to the University where he attended college as a freshman.

His student ID from his time as a Hawkeye is part of the collection.

The diverse collection also includes correspondence with past presidents like George Bush.

"He had relationships with all of the presidents over the years that he was, since he started at the white house when Nixon was president and he maintained these relationships," says Greg Prickman, Head of Special Collections at the University of Iowa Library.

Graduate Research Assistant Elizabeth Riordan sorted through the collection, she says Brokaw's coverage of 9/11 stood out to her.

"It was one of those moments where I had to stop for a minute and just take it in, because I was like remember watching this on TV in my classroom," she told us.

The collection gives behind the scenes insight to his career from Olympic press passes to his notebooks and schedules including when the Berlin Wall fell.

"In his appointment book you can see on that week how it's just this sort of regular day to day activities and meetings and then there's this block of days and everything's erased and crossed through and it just says Germany and you know what he was doing, where he was and why," says Prickman.

The collection is available to the public.
