Porch pirate steals package with dress for three-year-old

Posted: Updated:

Police are on the hunt for a porch pirate after he stole a package right off a Cedar Falls front porch. Inside that package was something for a three-year-old girl.

Cedar Falls Police say this is just one of four reports of stolen packages this week alone. Police say packages have been stolen from a home in the 400 block of West 22nd Street, the 3100 block of Grand Boulevard and the 2700 of Bicentennial Drive.

A fourth package was taken from a home in the 5200 block of Glacier Drive. The homeowner, Jerry Kohlhaas, caught the porch pirate on surveillance video. In the video you can see the man quickly snag the package and run.

"They move fast, seems like he knew what he was doing," said Kohlhaas, Cedar Falls. "He kept his head down the whole time."

Eventually the porch pirate would have found out not only did he steal a package, but he stole something for a child.  The stolen package was a flower girl dress for Kohlhaas' three-year-old daughter.

"It's a shame there are still people out there doing this kind of thing," said Kohlhaas.

Kohlhaas says he was at work when his surveillance camera sent an alert and the video to his phone.

"Crap I can't get home and catch him," said Kohlhaas. "But at least you can save it and give it to the police department and see where it goes from there."

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson says there are a few ways to try and prevent this from happening. He says to get your packages delivered to work or try and be home when they get dropped off.

"It's hard for people to stay home and get packages delivered and signed," said Kohlhaas.

Kohlhaas is hopeful police catch the man, but also hopes his daughter gets her dress back.

"If he hears this, throw it back in our driveway that'd be great," said Kohlhaas.

Kohlhaas says he has not told his daughter about what happened to her flower girl dress, but he says the wedding is in April and they may not be able to get a new one in time.

Cedar Falls Police say they are unsure if any of these stolen package reports are related. If you have any information please call police.
