He's still on a ventilator, but mostly breathing on his own.

Iowa is battling a *severe flu season -- the worst in the last 10 years..

Previous story:

WAUKEE- An Iowa boy is fighting for his life this morning after a severe case of the flu.

Jaxson Ridout was an active and athletic Waukee first-grader. Now, the 7-year-old boy is in the ER.

"He loves to sing, loves to dance, and loves to joke around. Just a fun loving little boy," mom Melody Ridout says.  "We thought we were losing him. Even the doc didn't think he was going to make it."

Jaxson was diagnosed with influenza a last week. His family thought he was in the clear. That is until his fever returned, his symptoms worsened, and he was rushed to the Methodist Emergency Room.

Born premature, his mom says he's always had weak lungs and viruses hit him hard, but she never anticipated this.

"I honestly thought when we were coming into the ER, he was going to get a couple treatments. He was going to get maybe some IV fluids because he was dehydrated, an that was it. And we were going to go home," she says.

Instead, Jaxson was diagnosed with respiratory failure  and put into a medically-induced coma.

He's been sedated since Friday, but in the last 24 hours, his mom has started to see some small movement from her youngest.

Jaxson opened his eyes for the first time last night -- since being placed in a medically induced coma.
