Dubuque's Finley hospital sees 2nd-most babies born ever in 2017

Posted: Updated:

It was a busy year for staff in the family birthing suites at Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

They helped deliver 771 babies--the second most babies ever born in a year there.

It was the most babies they've delivered since 1948, when a record 794 were born.

Staff there doesn't think this is in part to any wacky or sudden population increases in the area.

"I think the word is out that Finely is a great place to be to have a baby. We have dedicated, tenured staff that people recognize when they come for that second and third baby. And they love seeing those nurses over and over again," said Rebecca Richardson, director of the family birthing suites.

Khi Shireman is one of those moms that came back again and again. Her newest baby, Zoe, was born just this week, but she says she chose Finley because of the great experience she had before.

"I always say they treat you like royalty. Honestly, from check in to check out, everything is comfortable and smooth and takes the apprehension and anxiousness down," Shireman said.

2017 was full of milestones at Finley.  In June, they say four sets of twins born in just six days.  And in September, they saw the second-most births of all time with 84.

But even with the uptick in business, Shireman says her care never lacked.

"Not at all. I know that a friend visited, and she was like, 'it feels like no one else is up here but you.' And truly that is, I mean, you don't feel like your with anyone else, and that's kinda nice, you know?"

2018 is off to a hot start for the hospital as well.

Richardson says it was a busy January that included four sets of twins born.

We also contacted Mercy Hospital in Dubuque to get their birth numbers for the year, but they weren't able to provide us with those numbers.
