UI to drop Wynn's name following sexual misconduct accusations

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Vegas casino king, Steve Wynn was accused of widespread sexual misconduct of casino employees, last week.

Following the accusations, Wynn resigned as the Republican Party's National Finance Chair.

Now, the University of Iowa says they will remove Wynn's name from a campus building.

In 2013, Iowa's Institute for Vision Research was named for Wynn after he committed to donating $25 million towards research to cure hereditary blindness.

To date, the university says Wynn has donated $20 million of that commitment.

“The University of Iowa is committed to ending sexual violence and sexual misconduct and ensuring survivors know they are believed, supported, and assisted. It is incongruous with the university’s values to maintain the Wynn name on our program and building,” says UI President Bruce Harreld.

Before the name can officially be removed, the Board of Regents must approve the change.
