Highway 20 detour in Dubuque starts Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Starting Wednesday at 9 a.m., drivers headed west on Highway 20 in Dubuque will have to take a detour.

That's because of the Southwest Arterial Project. It will eventually be a four-lane, six mile highway. "In Dubuque, that will go from U.S. Highway 20 down to U.S. Highway 61/151," explained Assistant City Engineer Bob Schisel.

It's to decrease traffic in residential areas.

Before it's complete, the traffic pattern on a stretch of Highway 20 will change. Between the hours of nine in the morning and two in the afternoon, those heading west will be diverted onto a new road, the Southwest Arterial interchange at Seippel Road.

This is so construction crews can begin building a bridge over Highway 20.

The westbound traffic will be detoured until summer of 2019. This is also when two lanes of the project are scheduled to be complete.
