Chrome Horse returns to Newbo years after fire

Posted: Updated:

Talk about getting back up when you get knocked down, the Chrome Horse Saloon & Slop House has overcome two tragedies that forced them to start all over.

The restaurant and bar was originally located in Newbo where Brewhemia is now, that's where they survived the 2008 flood after closing for nine months.

"They had to start over from square one and redo the whole old building," says General Manager Derek Collins.

Six years later, in 2014, they had a fire forcing them from their building for the second time.

It was determined cleaning towels spontaneously combusted sparking the flames.

"It was very, very tragic you know we didn't know what to do or where to go," Collins says.

But they were able to re-open across town on Blairs Ferry Road the following year.

Now the Chrome Horse has returned to Newbo, opening up right across the street from their original location.

"Our toughest opportunity, you've got to keep swinging, you've got to keep coming back out," Collins told us.

The Newbo location will offer live music, breakfast, a game room, a party room and a large outdoor patio.

There is some fear about returning to the flood zone but Collins says it was reassuring to see how the city responded with protection during the 2016 flood.

"Yeah that's always a factor we'll have to deal with and I'm sure they'll be times you know but you've got to remember this city, everyone pulls together, you know they pull together and then you get through it," he tells us.

The Chrome Horse had their grand opening on Friday, they are open seven days a week.

The Blairs Ferry Road location will remain open as well.
