Live music provides escape for Dubuque nursing home residents

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Hands are clapping and feet are bouncing as Ron Lubbers plays "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley at Sunnycrest Manor in Dubuque.

He's performing thanks to a grant the nursing home received.

And his performance makes a big difference to these residents.

"I leave here feeling refreshed," said Diane Rondeau.  "It's soothing to me. They help me to get away from my troubles."

The crowd brightens up noticeably as he plays hits from their younger years.

"It's uplifting. You can sing, you can dance. It just changes everybody's mood," said Linda Schnee.

Beth Houselog, the life enrichment director at Sunnycrest, says they try to do as much to mix up the routine for these residents.

And for Rondeau, who struggles with long-term memory, recalling the words to these songs brings her a sense of peace.

"I don't remember times in my life that it brings me back to, but yet I remember all the words to all the songs," she said.

The nursing home is able to bring in about 40 live performances with the nearly $2,000 grant, something the residents there appreciate greatly.

"We might be old but we still like to have a good time!" said Schnee.
