City council to hold public hearing on limiting firework sales

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids City Council will hold a public hearing at noon today about limiting the sale of fireworks.

State law does not allow cities to ban the sale of fireworks altogether but it does allow them to regulate them through their zoning ordinances.

The city is proposing to limit sales to l-1 and l-2 industrial zones which cannot be used for residential areas.

They are also hoping to prohibit sales in the urban core of the city which includes downtown and core neighborhoods.

Sales would also be prohibited within 450 feet of any residential zone district.

Firework locations will also be required to provide customer parking and meet all of the building and fire codes.

The City Council is hoping to do the first reading of the ordinance today and the 2nd and 3rd reading on the 28th.

If the readings are successful the new limits would be in place before firework sales begin in December for the New Year holiday.
