Layoffs expected at M-H-I in Independence, employees say

Posted: Updated:

Employees at the Mental Health Institute in Independence say they expect up to 7 layoffs at the facility.

They learned of the layoffs in an email sent to employees by M-H-I Superintendent, Dr. Bhasker, Dave.

In the email, Dr. Dave says it's because of the facilities budget situation, but, there will be no reduction in the number of beds at M-H-I.

In the email to employees, Dr. Dave announces a Reduction in Force (RIF), due to the overall facility budget. The email says the RIF impacts custodial, maintenance and other ancillary areas, but will not directly affect patient services.

M-H-I is one of just two State Hospitals still open and operated by the State of Iowa. The other is located in Cherokee. The State of Iowa earlier closed the two other State Hospitals, in Mt. Pleasant and Clarinda.
