Waterloo church now geared for special needs families and members

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Making sure everyone feels welcome.

A Waterloo church is now catering to families and people with special needs.

Open Bible Church is on Jefferson Street, and its new initiative is to be a "church for all abilities."

Lead pastor Aaron Keller says he knows how hard service can be for people with special needs. He has three sons who are on the autism spectrum.

Sometimes the volume of the music, the lights, and the crowd of people can be overwhelming.

In the past, Pastor Keller's sons struggled to get through services at other churches.

Because of these challenges, the Open Bible Church is now catering to families and people with special needs.

They adjust the volume, dim the lighting, and have over-the-ear headphones. They also have a large open space behind the congregation for people to pace if they need to.

There's also a room for children's service that is filled with sensory toys, like peg boards and weighted blankets.

And this is all just the start, the church plans to keep adding and changing their church. They want to make sure everyone feels included in service.

Pastor Keller talks with all new families and members to hear what their needs and triggers might be.
