DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

An ambulance company in eastern Iowa is providing emergency calls across state lines.

Paramount Ambulance in Dubuque has been hired to help the Cuba City Area Rescue Squad, located in Grant County, Wisconsin.

"We have people at Cuba City, in their building, in our truck, ready to go," said Marvin Ney, service director.

The small town in Wisconsin has a shortage of EMS volunteers. It's an issue facing many rural towns across the country.

One of the Cuba City volunteers posted a video to Facebook saying they lacked helped, which resulted in the squad not being able to respond to some calls.

Unlike in Iowa, EMS is an essential service in Wisconsin, so it's required by law to provide an ambulance should there be a medical emergency.

The need to fill the void, costing more than $30,000 for the two week contract.

"Like thirty something thousand, it's $100 an hour coverage -- it's expensive, but you're looking at two people that are typically gonna be there on overtime at our service," added Ney.

So far, Paramount has responded to three calls in the last week.  The contract ends Friday morning.
