Dental office buys back candy for U.S. troops

Many kids are diving into their candy the day after Halloween while others are dumping it out.

Instead of eating it, pounds and pounds of candy were dumped off by kids on Wednesday to the Kalona Family Dental office part of the annual candy buy-back event.

The candy collected by the dental office will go to Operation Gratitude which sends care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas.

The pot was sweetened for the kids who brought in candy, $2 was given in exchange for every pound of candy given away. Kids also received tickets for every pound to be entered into contests for other toys.

"Our kids and some of our society in general has more than enough sugar in our diets so this is a way to promote healthy choices and also show the kids that they can have other rewards other than candy on a holiday," owner of Kalona Family Dental,Tammy Grimn, said.

This is the fourth year Grimn has hosted the event. Last year, they were able to donate over 80 pounds of candy for the troops. They expect to exceed that number next year.
