Glamour magazine announced its winners Monday for their "Women of the Year" distinction, and Iowan and U.S. astronaut, Peggy Whitson, is among the honorees.

The list is filled with a wide array of women who are making a difference in their chosen field, from politics to entertainment to, thanks to Whitson, outer space. Glamour editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive, said the chosen are "wildly diverse changemakers" who reflect a "tumultuous and electric year for women."

Whitson is the most experienced spacewoman in the world.  Including her most recent flight, she has logged 665 days in space.  During that flight, she performed her 10th spacewalk, became the first woman to actually command the space station twice, and 57-year-old Whitson became the oldest woman in space. Whitson was born in Mount Ayr and grew up on a farm outside Beaconsfield.  She received her undergraduate degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1981.

Other honorees are U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, 27 key facilitators of the Women's March on Washington, actor Nicole Kidman, singer Solange Knowles, Syrian refugee Muzoon Almellehan, late-night TV host Samantha Bee, supermodel Gigi Hadid, Dior's first female creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and "Wonder Woman" helmswoman Patty Jenkins.

There will be a gala for all of the honorees on November 13 in Brookyn, New York.
