Thousands of items to be auctioned off from historic village

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A number of historical items from the turn of the 20th century will soon be up for grabs.

The items come from the Ushers Ferry Historical Village in Cedar Rapids, which was heavily damaged during the 2008 floods. In total, 16 buildings were a loss. Many of the items available were from the destroyed buildings and haven't been on display since the floods.  This isn't because of damage, though.  It's because they no longer have any use for them.

"Some of those buildings are gone and those things just really don't have a purpose anymore out here, so there's no reason for us to keep them and just store them," Teresa White, Ushers Ferry Site Supervisor, said.

On Sunday, thousands of items will be up for auction, which will be hosted by Wears Auctioneering Inc. of Solon.

"We have a lot of different furniture, we have railroad things, we have a lot of china, artifacts, clothing. You name it, we have it. Anything that was 1890 and above to about 1910," White said.

Some items carry more personal stories; wedding gowns, family portrait albums, postcards, and diaries.

While some of the possessions were given to museums, there's still a wide assortment of items left over. White said it's sad to see some of them go but, the fact remains, they don't have use or room for them any longer.

"Hopefully, people who bid on them are people who will treasure them and they will have value to them, so it's much better to see that than sitting in a building," she said.

Proceeds from the auction will go to further preservation of the village. Currently, the village is working through a huge push to ADA-certify entrances to the historic buildings.

The auction will be open to the public at Ushers Ferry at noon on Sunday. Doors open at 10 a.m. to allow people to see the items before they go up for bidding.
