Christian Williams is leaving the University of Iowa's men basketball team after two seasons with the program.

Head Coach Fran McCaffery announced William's departure on the eve of the season opener. According to McCaffery, Williams asked for the release and was granted it on Thursday.

"Christian is a terrific young man with tremendous character. We are disappointed that Christian will no longer be a Hawkeye, but the players and coaches wish him the best in his future endeavors," McCaffery said in a statement.

Williams will finish the semester on an academic level before leaving. The Decatur, Illinois, native didn't say where he would be going to next.

"After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I have asked for my release from the University of Iowa. I would like to finish my athletic and academic goals closer to home. I would like to thank coach McCaffery and my teammates for their understanding and support with this decision," Williams stated in the release.

Williams played in 54 total games and started in six of them last season.
