Cedar Falls mayoral race nears Election Day

Posted: Updated:

In a city that continues to see growth, Cedar Falls' voters will be headed to the polls with two polarizing candidates to choose from.

Former UNI Professor Jim Skaine says he is running against incumbent Mayor Jim Brown because he wants to see some changes.  The first change on his list is to reverse work done to University Avenue.

"The two roundabouts at Boulder and Holiday are poorly-constructed. They are too big for the width of the road. I have done research, it would not cost that much to take those roundabouts out," said candidate Skaine.

Despite the long construction process, Mayor Brown says the new format is improving University Avenue.

Another hot-button issue in the city is the use of cross-trained police officers and firefighters.

"They will get the same training as new firefighters would. They are typically first on the scene because they are out and about being police officers. The council has been fully supportive of this, as am I. It draws a good balance between the safety of the city and the cost to keep taxes down," said Mayor Jim Brown.

Skaine, however, supports hiring more career firefighters.

"It has been clearly demonstrated that the city council has allowed the number of professional firefighters to decline from what it used to be when Cedar Falls was smaller.  We are not nearly as safe," said Skaine.

Overall, Mayor Brown hopes to continue to build the city.

"I appreciate the opportunity the last two years to serve our great city. A nice surprise has been the people; the people are fantastic; the volunteers who give their time and resources. I just want to continue the learning curve I am still on; still connecting some dots there, and move forward with what I have been doing," said Mayor Brown.

For a more in-depth look at this race, both Mayor Jim Brown and Jim Skaine will be on the Steele Report on November 5th.
