The Waterloo/Cedar Falls Salvation Army hosts Red Kettle Chili Cook Off

Posted: Updated:

The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls and Main Street Social Club are launching a new event to mark the beginning of the annual Salvation Army Christmas Campaign in Cedar Valley.

The groups are teaming up to launch the inaugural Red Kettle Chili Cook-Off at the Cedar Falls AmVets Post 49 on Friday, October 27 at 5 PM.

Open to the public, a five dollar ticket purchases all-you-can eat chili, cornbread and dessert.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at The Salvation Army, 89 Franklin Street, Waterloo or at the Amvets Post 49 in Cedar Falls. You can also purchase tickets the day of the event. The town mayors of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale will be on-hand to judge the competition

Special chili recipes will be entered by Cedar Valley residents. The recipes will be put into four categories, red, white, spicy, vegetarian.

Prizes, provided by the Waterloo Black Hawks, will be awarded to each category, with a grand prize going to the best overall chili.

The local Christmas campaign goal is $638,000 this year. Bell ringers will be out in the community on November 10.

“Each year, many contributions help The Salvation Army meet the most critical needs found in our community,” noted Major Harold Poff.  “When everyone plays a small part, it is amazing what is possible.”

You can sign up to be a volunteer bell ringer at
