IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The next Kid Captain for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team will be Leah McClain, an 11-year-old who has braved neurosurgery.

McClain, who now lives with her family in Pittsfield, Illinois, has received treatment at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital for a condition called cortical dysplasia -- an abnormality in brain development that occurs while in utero, according to the hospital. She was diagnosed in Iowa City after two surgeries on her brain.

Before diagnosis, Leah suffered two life-threatening seizures, but has since improved following the surgeries and with daily medication. She continues to meet with specialists at the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

On Saturday, Leah will stand alongside the Hawkeyes for the team's fifth home game of the season in Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff against the Minnesota Golden Gophers is slated for 5:35 p.m.

Learn more about Leah on the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital website.
