Name released of man injured in train accident

UPDATE: West Liberty Police tell us 44-year-old Chanel Charles, from Lone Tree, is being treated at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for injuries he sustained after his car was hit by a train. 

The accident happened over the weekend.

Fire crews were forced to use the JAWS of life to pull a man from a car after it was hit by a train in West Liberty.

Police were called to the 200 block of North Calhoun just before 1:00 PM this afternoon for a car versus train crash. The Iowa Interstate train pushed the car approximately two city blocks before it came to a stop.

Only one person was in the car and police say he was cut from the car by West Liberty Fire and Ambulance using the JAWS of life. The driver was flown by AirCare 1 helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals in critical condition.

The West Liberty Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Muscatine County Sherffs Office, The West Liberty Fire and Ambulance Department and The Iowa State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation. The crash did occur at an intersection with working flashing red crossing lights.
