Dubuque man admits to fraud scheme targeting older people

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A Dubuque man admits to being involved in a fraud scheme targeting older people across the U.S.  33-year-old Tobey Hines pleaded guilty to wire fraud.

According to an indictment, the scammers called people asking for bail money for a relative they claimed was in jail.  The money would then be sent through Western Union or Money Gram, some of which was then sent overseas.

More than 20 people have been charged in the case.

Four others, Shawn Vaassen, Carlos Rodriguez, Michael Marcov and Stephanie Marcov, pleaded guilty earlier this year for their role in a similar scheme.
