Government warns schools of cyber threats

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSTON (KWWL) -

The Department of Education is warning schools of hackers asking them for money or the group will release stolen private records.

So far, at least 3 states have been affected, including Iowa.

Recently, the Johnston School District canceled classes for a day after threatening text messages were sent to parents.

A group of overseas hackers said it was responsible.

The Department of Education says in some cases, hackers have threatened violence until they get paid.

The FBI is investigating and authorities say none of the threats of violence has been credible.

The government says they're likely targeting school districts with weak security.

Federal authorities are offering tips for school district IT staff and information about what to do in case your school is targeted.
