DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Area cities are getting ready for the colder weather coming in. For some, including Dubuque, it means closing parks, and certain outdoor activities for the season.

City staff have been preparing for the colder months ahead.

Some parks will be off limits, including Miller Riverview Campground. The final night to camp is Oct. 29th. Originally, it was set to close Oct. 22nd, but because of demand, it'll be open for an extra week.

The Port of Dubuque Marina is also closing Oct. 29th, ahead of the cold weather. "It's a nice place to visit and they've got a great facility down here, probably one of the best in the upper Midwest," said Walt Webster, former captain for the Spirit of Dubuque.

Webster encourages people to visit before the season is over.

"There's lots of activity down here, from the other boats that are coming in and dropping off passengers. Just to see what's the general river traffic is like, you got a good place to see the railroad bridge, the barge is going through, you get real close to them down here."

Other locations affected are neighborhood parks. According to city staff they will be closed later this month too, but technically you can still walk through and kids can play in them. They'll be winterized, meaning the restrooms will be locked, and water turned off.

Murphy Park will only be closed for a portion of the winter. The annual 'Reflections in the Park' display of holiday lights is set to take place there .
