Father accused of leaving baby in van at Taco Bell

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Police say an Iowa man left his one-year-old son in a van parked at a Taco Bell for two hours.

It happened Wednesday afternoon at the Cedar Rapids location in the 600 block of 1st Avenue NE.

There was no hesitation for Taco Bell General Manager Jackie Brown when she noticed the baby in the van.

"Firs thing, first thing I needed to get the baby out," she told us.

"I rushed inside and got something to pry the door open," Brown says.

She tells us she then comforted the child who was very upset.

"I just immediately got in the back seat and just unbuckled him and just held him trying to, trying to comfort him because you could tell he had just been crying so hard."

Police say 24-year-old Trevor Brickson abandoned his son in the van.

Brickson was arrested two hours later when he returned to the restaurant.

He is being charged with Child Endangerment, Driving While Barred and Possession of an Open Container.

Brown says before the baby was found employees noticed something was odd.

We are told Brickson was bringing pieces of the van into the restaurant and was throwing them away.

"We went out and asked if everything was okay and if there was anything we could do to help and he said basically no there was nothing we could do to help and he seemed really disoriented," says Brown.

Police believe Brickson was involved in a collision before going to Taco Bell, possibly with a guard rail.

Brown says Brickson asked to leave his van in the parking lot and she figured he just needed a tow.

Employees were able to get a closer look at the vehicle after Brickson left, that's when they noticed the child.

"I peered in the window and he was just balling his eyes out," says Brown.

We are told the baby is okay and was reunited with family.

Police say they had received a reckless driving report on the van Brickson was driving about two hours before the incident at Taco Bell.

According to online court documents, Brickson plead guilty to a Child Endangerment charge just last year.
