IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

If a bill has pink or red Chinese characters printed on it, it may be counterfeit according to police.

The Iowa City Police Department issued a warning to residents and retailers that counterfeit bills were circulating in the area. Police said they've had reports of fake bills that are printed on poor quality paper and that display pink or red Chinese characters on the front and back.

The release from police, provided reminders for people on how to spot fake bills from the U.S. Department of Treasury that can be found here.

Police said to contact them immediately if a bill looks to be fake and to do the following:

  • Do not put yourself in danger
  • Do not return the bill to the passer
  • Delay the passer with some excuse, if possible
  • Observe the passer’s description, and their companions’ descriptions
  • Write down their vehicle license plate numbers, if you can
