Giant pumpkins garnering big attention in the tri-states

Posted: Updated:

Take a trip to Vesperman Farms in Lancaster, Wis., and you'll find a corn maze, freshly made donuts and plenty of activities for the kids.

But it's the pumpkins that are grabbing the most attention.

Four of them, to be specific.  They're giant pumpkins, and they all weigh more than 600 pounds each.

The heaviest pumpkin weighs just a little under 900 pounds. And their grower says they could've been bigger.

"They were still gaining 10 pounds a day," said Bruce Vesperman.  "They were gaining 100 pounds a week."

Vesperman belongs to the Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers Association.

He's in his fifth year growing giant pumpkins, and says this is his most successful year by far.

"I've tried for five years, and this is the best I've ever done. Three years ago I had one plant, one pumpkin that was 700 pounds. This is phenomenal for me," he said.

And while many are marveling at these pumpkins, Vesperman says he has a long way to go as a grower.

"They aren't really spectacular pumpkins.  These are so small they wouldn't even place in a contest. They're up to a ton. You have to have at least a 1500 pound pumpkin to even get some prize money," he said.
