HONOR FLIGHT: Veterans get a warm welcome home

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The last Cedar Valley Honor Flight of the year took more than a hundred veterans to Washington D.C. on Tuesday.

The 108 veterans on the trip included 104 Vietnam and four Korean War vets.

After a day visiting the many memorials that were built in their honor, the veterans were welcomed home by a large crowd at the Waterloo Regional Airport.

Family and strangers lined the lobby of the airport to welcome home and thank the veterans for their service.

One woman got the chance to welcome home her brother, something she didn't get the chance to do when he came home from the war.

"Well, they were not received with a warm welcome back in the 60's and early 70's. So for him, I think it's just a release of emotions.  These men are getting recognized for something they had to do, it wasn't a choice.  So it's just with great honor and pride that I'm here tonight," said Lois Johnson of Cedar Falls.

Lois kept every letter that her brother Richard wrote her during his time serving. She presented them to her brother in a book as part of his welcome home.
