NASHUA (KWWL) -

UPDATE: An 8-year-old boy is in stable condition after being hit by a stray bullet at an apple orchard. The Chickasaw County Sheriff as well as a family member confirm the boy is in stable condition.

Authorities responded to the call Sunday afternoon at the Apples on the Avenue Orchard in Nashua.

What witnesses described as a beautiful day, took a scary turn.

"The kids are having a blast and running around picking apples and playing with the petting zoo and riding pony's just having a great time," said Manda Slessor.

Slessor, who works the petting zoo, says one minute the 8-year-old was having a great time with his family. The next, she was helping those around her care for the boy until an ambulance arrive.

"When I first walked up there, I thought maybe he had fell," said Slessor. "I was kind of in disbelief when I asked."

The boy was taken to the Waverly Health Center and then flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The Chickasaw County Sheriff believes the boy was hit by a stray bullet from one of several shooting ranges at the Nashua Fish and Game Club. Authorities say it is unclear what type of firearm the stray bullet came from. In the meantime, the shooting range has been shut down so authorities can continue their investigation.

According to the orchard's owner, Darin Enderton, the orchard has been there for forty years and has never seen a stray bullet come through their grounds.

"This is a very freak accident," said Enderton. "We're so sorry that this happened. We're praying for the family right now."

Enderton says the range is about a mile from his orchard.

"They have precautions in place," said Enderton.

Enderton says the range does have berms to catch stray bullets.

As for the orchard, Enderton says his customers safety is his number one priority.

"Safety is paramount," said Enderton. "And we want people to be safe, and we believe our customers trust us enough to come back."

The orchard will be back open Tuesday. Enderton says he's working with the sheriff's office to make sure customers feel comfortable and safe coming back.

The Nashua Fish and Game club will be closed until further notice

Nashua police, the Chickasaw County Sheriff, Iowa State Patrol, the DNR and DCI are all investigating this accident.
