Church serves food to help hunger in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Once a week at a former pawn shop on Central Avenue in Dubuque, the line is wrapped around the block, with people in need of food.

"I got my groceries," one man said. "I been coming here for six years, six years, it's been good, it's been good to me."

The food giveaway is by the Dubuque Community Church.

There's a variety of items to pick from -- veggies, and fruits, even cheese made from local farmers. "We give away mostly bread and produce, and a meal every Friday," said Renee Downs, member of the church who helps with the operation.

It's free for anyone, no special income requirements needed.

"Anyone can come. Some people who don't get food stamps, or don't have other programs, it's very nice for them because they don't have other opportunities and they just need -- some people live on the streets and they just need a little help," added Downs.

The food is donated by the St. Stephens Food Bank, also area grocery stores, so people can go home and stock their fridge.

The Dubuque Community food giveaway is located at 1696 Central Avenue. Hours are Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
