Waterloo first graders wear lab coats to, "feel like scientists"

Turning thinking into discovery.

An eastern Iowa school creates a different type of "school uniform."

The first grade teachers at Lincoln Elementary in Waterloo had a new vision for this school year.

It's one they just started to turn into reality.

They want every single first grader to walk into class, hang up their bags, put on their lab coats, and turn into scientists.

The teachers say that by putting on the lab coat, it helps get them excited to learn and experiment.

This year, the Waterloo School District has a new science program for the first graders.

So the teachers thought this would be a perfect time to give this a try.

When I asked the students what it felt like to wear the coat, a lot of them did say they felt smarter, more comfortable, and more like adults.

Originally the plan was for the students to wear these coats the whole day.

Since this is new, they're only wearing them for a part of the day, in the early afternoon.

Around 100 students are wearing these lab coats.
