Missing for three weeks, Delaware County dog found...and you won't believe where

Posted: Updated:

Sadie, a 13-year-old beagle-lab mix dog belonging to the Thein family in Delaware County, regularly wanders through the country.

But when she didn't return one morning, the family got worried.

"Did she get hit with a car, did a coyote get her. Did she get in that livestock trailer somehow?" said Bev Conner, the family's grandmother.

Turns out, that's exactly what happened.

Sadie had wandered into a livestock trailer that was taken to a nearby farm.  When the livestock was offloaded, Sadie stayed behind, and no one noticed.

For three weeks, the family spread word, hung fliers and did all they could to locate her.

When the trailer's owners went back to the trailer, they found Sadie, alive and well.

"The folks went to use the trailer and checked to see if there was enough bedding in it, and out came Sadie," said Conner.

Sadie was a little lighter, but no worse for the wear.

But how did she survive that long?  The family can only speculate, but they've formed one popular theory.

"She ate cow poop," said 5-year-old Kinsley Thein.

When they found out what happened, 8-year-old Brady said he was simply, "shocked."

"She's a survivor. I guess the instincts, they'll eat whatever to survive. Obviously, very happy for the kids and the family to have the dog and closure on the missing dog," Conner said.

Conner says the episode is a reminder to make sure your dog has accurate tags--the vet was able to ID her immediately and get her back to the family once she was found.
