Clermont man charged with attempted murder after attack on father

Posted: Updated:

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office says a Clermont man is in custody after attacking his father in eastern Iowa.

36-year-old Lonnie Vernon Davis Jr. is in the Fayette County Jail on a charge of Attempt to Commit Murder, and could face up to 25 years in prison if he's convicted.

Officers took a 911 call from the victim's wife yesterday, saying her husband sent her a text message that said "his son was going to kill him." She told police the two men were driving on a rural road east of Wadena when an argument boiled over into a physical struggle, and Davis Jr. allegedly tried to strangle his father. According to police, Davis Jr. also threatened to dump his father's body in the water after saying he would kill him during the struggle. Officers say the suspect drove his father further away from town, where he continued the alleged attack.

Deputies were able to get to the location of the struggle with help from the victim's wife, who also received more texts from the victim as they were headed to the scene.

The father also recorded parts of the attack. There's no information on the victim's condition at this time.

KWWL went to Davis Jr.'s last address to get some answers. However, neighbors say he lived in a camper that was long gone.

"That's crazy, said Page Keune. "Why would you want to kill your own father? I mean that's your own blood, you know."

Keune said the allegations didn't surprise her because of Davis Jr's history. This isn't his first run-in with the law. Most recently, Davis Jr. was charged with stalking his ex-wife in Dubuque County.
