Especially For You Race raises nearly $400K

Thousands of people from all over the world helped raise nearly $400,000 during a breast cancer awareness run in Cedar Rapids Sunday. Nearly 15,000 people participated in the Especially For You Race in the morning.

Many people were racing for their family members, themselves and for everyone who has battled cancer. Hundreds of people dressed in pink, flooded the streets, and the splash of pink was just one way participants showed their support for those who have battled and will battle cancer.

"It's pretty emotional. There are a lot of people that have been touched by cancer," said Daphne Donald of Muscatine.

Donald says her mother fought cancer for months.

"We are very fortunate our mom is doing well, chemo was terrible for her but she survived," said Donald.

Walker, Dianna Bremer is no stranger to cancer herself, saying she walked to support her family.

"We've had two relatives that had breast cancer, the girl's grandmother and my grandmother," said Bremer, Cedar Rapids. "I had skin cancer so it kind of hit home."

No matter who people were walking or running for, everyone says they are just grateful to spread awareness about this disease.

"We are so happy, we are tickled pink that people are coming from all over," said Bremer. "The little town of Cedar Rapids trying to do a big thing."

Organizers say more than 14,700 people took part in the run and the oldest participant was 96-years-old. Organizers raised  $389,000 from race registrations, and organizers say some of the money will go to people affected by the disease in Iowa.
