CARBONDALE, Ill. (KWWL) -

The UNI Panthers opened conference play with a 24-17 win at Southern Illinois. The Panthers never trailed in the game coming off an early season bye week.

Eli Dunne put together an impressive performance completing 26 of 36 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Daurice Fountain was the recipient of several of those, leading UNI with 105 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The Panthers needed to hold off a couple of late threats from the Salukis. Jake Hartford picked off a Sam Straub pass in the red-zone with UNI leading by seven in the final two minutes. Southern Illinois got the ball back in the final minute, but a Malcolm Washington interception stopped the Salukis last gasp effort.

UNI returns to the UNI-Dome next week to host Western Illinois.
