Wapsie Valley stays perfect with 38-22 win over Lisbon

The revenge factor played a key role as Wapsie Valley topped Lisbon 38-22 in a key district match-up.

With the win, the Warriors avenged a 21-9 loss to the Lions that cost them a shot at a district title.

Wapsie Valley had to come from behind in the early going, however, as Lisbon's Jake Jennett hit Hagen Waters for a touchdown on their first drive of the game for a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second 15 minutes belonged to the Warriors. Quarterback Tanner Sauerbrei opened their scoring with a two-yard keeper for a 7-6 edge. Minutes later Sauerbrei found Austin Wittenberg on a 30 yard scoring strike and an eight point lead. Jake Kuhlman scored their third touchdown of the half on an 11 yard fourth down run. Wapsie Valley scored 24 unanswered points to lead 24-6 at halftime.

Lisbon pulled within ten in the second half on a long halfback pass from Austin Krob to Wes Benyshek. Wapsie Valley counted on the next drive with Kuhlman's second touchdown of the game as the Warriors held the Lions at bay to stay perfect in the district.

"Last year when we lost to them it really stung and it cost us a district championship,” said Kuhlman after the win, “That hurt us all year. We've been waiting for this game all year. We've been grinding all offseason just getting ready for it."
